Dangerghost

Here’s Christina Aguilera’s performance from last night’s 2010 Mtv Abortion Movie Awards. This was one of a maybe two things I enjoyed from the show, if not the only thing. To make things concise, here’s why:

• I was a big proponent of Lady Gaga’s. I’ve kinda fallen a bit off that wagon, but I still give her mad props. She’s delving into a realm that could really go either way. She’ll either come up with something genius or go down a path of horrible destruction. 
• I provide that point, because I was really disappointed in Aguilera’s pre-release hating on Gaga. Aguilera was here before Gaga & she should act like it. By attacking Gaga, Aguilera put herself lower. It should be the other way around (whether it’s true or not).
• I’ve had the Bionic album for about a week now. It’s nothing groundbreaking or life changing, but it is highly serviceable. If you want dance songs, it’s got them. Catchy, Pop songs? On it. Slow meaningful songs? Totally. I was getting ready to really hate that album, but I don’t. I’m actually okay with that.
• Watching this performance was my first look at how the material would come across live & I was scared CA was gonna try some outlandish shit to try and “top” a Gaga performance. Instead, it was a solid medley with flashes & dances & sparkles, etc…
• Her hair and outfit are definitely not everyday, but it isn’t ridiculous or Ugly Art the way Gaga’s stuff is. I liked it all. Dare I say it was classy (I use that term relative to the subject matter), compared to the travesty that was Britney’s Circus tour. Aguilera = Ferrari. Britney = Daewoo.
• I don’t care where your allegiances lie within the pop world. Not even Madonna can compare to Aguilera’s pipes. Mariah Carey could’ve been tops, but she threw it all away years ago. You can see a bit of the power CA weilds around the 3:45 mark. When her fingers start to flicker on the microphone, shit’s about to get real.
• Finally, Christina is a mom now. With that, she’s obviously going to lose some of the sexual edge she used to have. Coming into this album, I was prepared for it to show. And it does. With that, however, comes a bit of professionalism that I don’t think was as apparent as before. (I mean, you didn’t see her dancing with a stale-Tom Cruise-joke ala J-Lo.) She’s a bit more focused, which I appreciate. 

It’s been a few years, so I think she’s getting used to riding that entertainment rollercoaster again. Things (including the album) are gonna be a bit uneven at first. Look towards the middle of her tour and her next album for her to (hopefully) hit her stride for realz.
